Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisarı) haqqında

Rumeli Hisarı is an Ottoman fortress on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul's Sarıyer district, at the strait's narrowest point. Anadolu Hisarı faces it from the opposite shore, and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge is nearby.

History of Rumeli Hisarı

It was built in about four months in 1452, a year before the conquest of Istanbul, on the orders of Mehmed II. Its purpose was to control ships passing through the Bosphorus and cut Constantinople off by sea. The fortress has three large towers and several smaller ones.

What to see

Paths along the walls open wide views of the Bosphorus and the bridge. The courtyard has an open-air theatre used for summer concerts.

Tips for visiting

  • You can walk here along the shore from Bebek.
  • The steps are steep and stony; wear comfortable shoes.
  • The waterfront cafés around the fortress are good for breakfast with a Bosphorus view.
