Two passengers sitting next to each other on the same flight may have paid completely different prices for their seats. The reason is simple: fares change with the season, demand, the day of the week and when you book. Knowing how this works lets you spend a lot less on the same trip. Here are 12 ways that actually work.
1. Book early
For international flights, buying about 2–4 months ahead is often cheaper. For summer, New Year and public holidays, start looking even earlier. On popular routes like Dubai, Istanbul, Antalya, Paris and Rome, the cheapest seats sell first and prices climb quickly as demand grows.
2. Be a little flexible with dates
If your dates aren't fixed, look at flights a few days earlier and later too. Sometimes a single day makes a noticeable difference. Midweek flights are also often cheaper than weekend ones.
3. Look at early-morning and late-night flights
Few people like very early or very late departures, so they're often cheaper than daytime flights. If you can handle one short night, it's a good saving.
4. Pick the right season
Prices peak in July–August, over New Year, Novruz and Christmas. The best-value months are usually February, March, October and November. Flights and hotels are cheaper then, and the sights are less crowded.
5. Decide on baggage in advance
If you travel with hand luggage only, low-cost airline fares can be very good value. But if you need a checked bag, add it when you book: buying it at the airport costs much more. More: hand luggage and baggage rules.
6. Check alternative airports
Cities like London, Paris, Milan and Istanbul have several airports. A ticket to the other airport is sometimes much cheaper. Just factor in how much time and money it takes to get from that airport into the city.
7. Compare return and one-way tickets
Sometimes a return ticket is the cheaper option; sometimes two one-way tickets with different airlines cost less. It's worth spending a few minutes comparing both.
8. Consider connecting flights
Direct flights are convenient, but not always the cheapest. A flight with one stop can be much better value, especially on long routes. We explain how much time to leave and what to watch out for in our article on connecting flights.
9. Follow sales
Airlines run sales throughout the year. The biggest discounts usually come around Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the change of seasons. Sign up for your favourite airlines' newsletters and you'll hear about these offers first.
10. Compare flight and hotel together
Sometimes a flight and hotel booked together, as a package, cost less than booking them separately. It's worth checking this for resort destinations like Antalya and Dubai.
11. Read the conditions of cheap fares
The cheapest fares are usually non-refundable and charge extra for date changes. If your plans might change, a slightly pricier flexible fare can end up cheaper. Travel insurance also helps you recover part of the costs if a flight is cancelled or delayed or your bag is lost.
12. Book through a reliable platform
When you book, check that payment is secure, prices are transparent, no hidden fees appear later, and there's a support team you can contact if something goes wrong. Being able to compare flights, hotels and tours in one place saves time too. You can compare flights by date and price on AviaBazaar.
