Your first trip abroad is exciting and a little nerve-racking too. Where do you go at the airport, what goes in the suitcase, how do you get into the city when you land? The good news is that you can answer all of these in advance. These 10 tips will make your first trip a lot easier.
1. Check your documents in advance
Look at when your passport expires and find out the entry rules of the country you're visiting. Some countries require your passport to stay valid for several months after your trip ends.
If you need a visa, don't leave the application to the last few days. Get your ticket, hotel booking, insurance and other documents ready early. You can check where you can go without a visa in our article on visa-free countries in 2026.
2. Double-check your ticket
After you buy your ticket, make sure your first and last name are spelled exactly as in your passport. Even one wrong letter can cause problems. Check the flight date, time, airport and terminal too.
If you have a connecting flight, look separately at the time between flights and the visa rules of the country where you change planes. We cover this in detail in our article on connecting flights.
3. Learn the baggage rules
Not every ticket includes the same baggage. Some fares cover only a small bag, others include checked baggage too. Before you pack, check the weight and size limits on your ticket. Find out what you can't take in hand luggage as well: liquids, power banks, sharp items. We've gathered it all in our article on hand luggage and baggage.
4. Get to the airport early
If it's your first flight, arriving well ahead of time is especially important. Check-in, bag drop, security and passport control all take time. Find out how early your airline recommends arriving for international flights and add a little extra on top.
5. Use online check-in
Many airlines let you check in online before your flight. You can often choose a seat and get an electronic boarding pass on your phone. Even if you check in online, you'll still need to go to the check-in desk if you have a bag to drop or your documents need an extra check.
6. Plan your money and cards
Don't rely on just one way to pay. Take some cash as well as your bank card. Find out the local currency, how widely cards are accepted and what your bank charges for transactions abroad.
7. Sort out internet before you go
Abroad you'll need internet for maps, taxis, bookings and staying in touch. Before the trip, compare roaming packages, local SIM cards and eSIM options. Save your hotel address, tickets and other key details on your phone so you can open them offline.
8. Know how to get from the airport to your hotel
The first thing you'll do in a new city is get from the airport to where you're staying. Check the prices and hours of the metro, buses, trains, taxis and transfers in advance. It's easier to plan this at home, especially if you land at night.
9. Don't forget travel insurance
Unexpected things happen on trips: getting ill, a cancelled flight, a lost bag. All of that means extra costs. Find out the insurance requirements of your destination and read exactly what your policy covers.
10. Plan, but don't fill every hour
Deciding on the main sights and key bookings in advance saves time. But planning every hour makes a trip exhausting. Pick two or three main places a day and keep the rest of the time for wandering. Often the best memories come from the moments that weren't in the plan.
In short
Check your documents and baggage rules, get to the airport early, and sort out internet and transport in advance. Do that, and your first trip will go smoothly. If you're not sure where to go first, have a look at our guides to Dubai and Istanbul. You can compare flights on AviaBazaar.
